Autism Assessment (Adults & Children)

EW Psychology Wales undertakes a small number of autism assessments for adults and children, delivered by experienced associate clinicians with specialist expertise in neurodevelopmental assessment.

We recognise that seeking an autism assessment can be a significant and often emotional step. Our approach is neuro‑affirmative, trauma‑informed, and person‑centred, with careful attention to developmental history, lived experience, strengths, and support needs.

Assessments are completed in line with NICE guidance and the All‑Wales Neurodevelopmental (ND) Pathway, and may be suitable for individuals seeking diagnostic clarity, support planning, or documentation for reasonable adjustments.

What the Assessment Involves

Autism assessments typically include:

  • Initial screening and consultation
  • Detailed developmental history (including informant input where appropriate)
  • Clinical interviews and standardised tools (as clinically indicated)
  • Multidisciplinary‑informed formulation
  • Diagnostic conclusion (where criteria are met)
  • A comprehensive written report suitable for submission to services
  • Feedback session and next‑steps discussion

Assessments are adapted sensitively for adults, children, and young people, including those with complex or overlapping presentations.

Our Assessment Standards (NICE‑Aligned)

All autism assessments at EW Psychology Wales are undertaken in line with NICE guidance, which emphasises:

  • A developmental, lifelong perspective
  • Use of multiple sources of information (clinical interview, history, informants)
  • Consideration of differential and co‑occurring presentations (e.g. ADHD, anxiety, trauma, sensory differences)
  • A biopsychosocial and formulation‑based approach, not screening alone
Clear feedback, written documentation, and recommendations

NICE guidance underpins both private and NHS autism diagnostic practice across the UK.

NHS Neurodevelopmental Pathways (Including Cwm Taf)

Where appropriate and with consent, EW Psychology autism assessment reports can be submitted to NHS neurodevelopmental services, including the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Neurodevelopmental Pathway, as part of an individual’s wider care journey.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board follows the All‑Wales Neurodevelopmental Pathway, which sets national standards for assessment and acceptance of referrals.
